There is a lot you can tell about our church by our name: City Presbyterian. We chose “City” because of our focus on being a church FOR Long Beach. We want to reflect God’s care for this city and we are actively finding ways to manifest the transforming love of Jesus through relationships in our community. We want to engage our culture with the gospel story, believing that this story provides hope and meaning for those who are questioning, struggling, or hurting. Our hope is that the people of Long Beach, whether Christians or not, would see us as a positive influence on the future of this city.
We chose to include “Presbyterian” because that is who we are. We’re not trying to hide or gloss over the fact that our tradition and spiritual heritage is important. We certainly don’t boast in being Presbyterian nor do we believe God loves us more than our other Christian brothers and sisters. In fact, we are continuing to build healthy relationships with other churches and organizations in Long Beach with a common love for Jesus. As Presbyterians, we realize we can offer nothing to God but our own brokenness and need and we believe He accepts us graciously through Jesus, our Lord. Our church structure also places a high value on leadership accountability for the protection of God’s people and the long term health of His church.
